This painting is on a 6×8 inch sheet of toned tan mixed media paper, based on a free reference photo of Crystal River, Florida by Heidi Benet Magyar. The colours in the sky and reflections, set against many greys, drew me in. Thank you Heidi for the inspiring photo.
One of the aims in tackling this was to try and get the colours mixed with their vibrancy and differing greys. I’m only using three primaries – ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow pale and permanent alizarin crimson – plus white. This forces me to develop mixing skills ready for when I take a minimal amount of equipment and supplies out for painting outside – known as en plain air – when I have a short holiday.
